ORGANIC CITRUS PEEL AS A SOURCE OF VITAMIN C
Including the cofactors, Rutin, Hesperidin and Bioflavonoids.

This recipe for natural vitamin C complex (courtesy of Ian 'Doc' Shillington ND) provides all of the cofactors, Rutin, Hesperidin and Bioflavonoids. For your interest there is a commercial citrus extract product, Agrumax, that is advertised as being helpful in treating parasites, athletes foot, rinsing water, drinking water, and diarrhea. The makers of Agrumax advertise it as an antiseptic, antirheumatic, bactericide, fungicide and an antioxidant, useful against moulds, candida albicans, influenza virus and parasites. The main ingredients in their citrus extract are limonene. coumarins, flavonoids, vitamin A, B1, B2, and C, and mucilages.

My understanding is that you can use any citrus peel, orange, mandarin, lemon, tangerine, lime, or grapefruit but with one caveat, the fruit must be pesticide free - that is organic.

INGREDIENTS

  • Oranges, mandarins, lemons, tangerines, limes, or grapefruit.

INSTRUCTIONS
Wash and dry the citrus. Using a sharp knife remove the peel and the pith. Dry the peel in a dehydrator. If you don't have a dehydrator and choose to dry the citrus peel at room temperature then you will need to turn it over twice a day and be on the lookout for mold growth. If the peel should go mouldy then it would be best to discard it.

If you grind the dried citrus peel to a powder in a coffee grinder you will find that it gets quite hot, which may or may not destroy the vitamin C which is heat sensitive. What I do is to place a ceramic dinner plate in the freezer for five minutes then grind the citrus peel and spread the powder thinly over the plate and return the plate to the freezer for five minutes. If the powder still has little bits of peel in it then sieve it through a sieve. Transfer the powder to a container and store in the freezer. (If you store damp citrus powder at room temperature or in the refrigerator it will probably go mouldy.)

My feeling is that you could use a grain mill to grind the citrus peel to a more even powder without the increase in temperature that you get with a coffee grinder. When I have the opportunity to experiment with a grain mill I will update this recipe.

Doc Shillington suggests a dosage of one teaspoon of citrus powder each day.

MEASUREMENTS
1 teaspoon = 5 ml / 5 gm. 1 tablespoon = 15 ml / 15 gm. 15 tablespoons = 1 cup / 225 ml. 1 cup = 8 fluid oz / 225 ml. 1 US gallon = 3.6 litres. 1 lb = 16 oz / 454 gm. Temperature 20C = 68F. Conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius: °C = (°F - 32) / 1.8. Conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 1.8 + 32
