SUMMARY: A
motivational story demonstrating extraordinary determination and leadership.

Extract:
"The explorer Shackleton and his crew set out in 1914 to cross Antarctica
on foot with a team of dogs. The ship gets trapped in ice and eventually sinks.
The 28 men, many of whom who have never travelled over ice before, have to face
the prospect of giving into feelings of hopelessness and eventually drowning when
the ice melts or working as a team to achieve an almost impossible goal... If
you want to develop your leadership qualities and motivate your team to achieve
extraordinary outcomes then watch this film and practise identifying with Shackleton..."

"If you want to get
a better idea of the emotional resources that it takes to achieve a goal then
you are encouraged to watch the film Castaway which stars Tom
Hanks.

In
this story the character Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive, is stranded on a deserted
island somewhere in the Pacific ocean. He manages to survive on fish and coconut
and after 4 years he is in quite good physical condition except that he is very
lonely. He attempts suicide but is unsuccessful then one day he gets the idea
to build a raft and sail away from the island into a shipping lane some hundreds
of miles away in the hope that a passing ship might rescue him.

If we look at his situation in terms of values what we have is a man who has hit
rock bottom and is in emotional pain and wants to move towards love, relationships,
people etc. Let's just call this love. Now when he first landed on the island
he tried to swim through the surf which breaks on a shallow razor sharp reef and
in the process he injured himself. So to move towards love he has to move towards
the prospect of more pain and by sailing out into the ocean it is an all or nothing
attempt at reaching his desired outcome.

So
Chuck wants to move away from the emotional pain of just existing on the island
towards the love that he can get from living with other people but to move towards
love he also has to move towards more possible pain and suffering on his sea journey
which could ultimately kill him.

It
is a nice clear example of values conflict which many of us experience in life,
but hopefully not to such a degree. We set a goal for ourselves, think about taking
action towards it, then a negative emotion kicks in and we back off. We then rationalise
our lack of action with a hundred and one excuses. But in reality we fail to take
action for a number of reasons:..." Read

Are you ready to escape the cage of your conditioning? 'Water'.

The film Water explores
the 2000 year old custom where the widow of a Hindu has three choices: 1. burn
alive with her dead husband in the funeral fire. 2. lead a life of self-denial,
or, 3. if the family permits, marry her husband's younger brother....

Kalyani
a beautiful young widow falls in love with a Gandhi supporter who offers to marry
her. When the other widows find out they curse her and lock her in her room. Once
again when one of them is given the opportunity to free herself from her conditioning
and lead a better life the other widows fight to maintain their model of the world.
It shows how when we make progress towards what is true for us then friends, family
and society may sanction us and try to put us back in the cage. When others try
to improve their life then we may do the same. However it is only our childhood
conditioning and lack of awareness that keeps us in the cage....

In
the course Zen and the Art of Living we use a 7 step goal setting
model - the SUCCESS model. Step 5 is the ecology check: "Is
there any part of you or anyone in your life who may object to you achieving your
desired outcome? If so then you need to deal with this part in order for you to
achieve your outcome"

Read
the article...

o

Intense fear during meditation replaced by a felt presence.

A woman sent me the following
email: "I had a scary encounter the other night when I was meditating. I
did not ground myself and I live in a two story house and I am sure there was
something else in the room with me that night. I was a bit scared but now I am
meditating out side and looking forward to coming to Zen
and the Art of Living again. N.T.

My
response: It sounds like an experience of the right amygdala which is associated
with negative emotions such as fear, depression, anger, rage, and experiences
of demons and devil. (The left amygdala is associated with positive emotions and
a felt presence of angels and God.) The felt presence is generated by your mind.
It can feel very real and intense. Be courageous, sit very still and let the emotions
arise and even though you feel scared just watch the experience with fascination.
I had a very intense experience like that over three days once which shifted to
a very beautiful experience. Read
