Ginger
Beer Containers
Containers that should be suitable for making ginger beer
are glass or food grade ceramic bowls, 5 litre glass demijons, 25 or 50 litres
plastic carbouys available from home-brew shops, highest quality stainless steel
cooking pots, or second hand oak wine barrels or steel kegs.
Kombucha
containers
Culture
the Kombucha tea either in glass or number 1 or 2 food grade plastic. Look for
a triangle on the base of the plastic container. Inside the triangle will be a
number from 1-7. It has been suggested that plastic type 1 and 2 are suitable
for food contact but anything higher should be avoided. Even so, some type 7 containers
are used to store bottled water.
Type 1 plastic is Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE). PETE plastic containers include bottles made for water, juice, cooking oil, soap, detergent, shampoo, clear plastic liquor bottles, 2 litre soda bottles, and some food jars.
Type 2 plastic is High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). It is used to make containers for both food and cleaning products such as bottles for milk, water, juice, cooking oil, windshield washer fluid, shampoo, and tubs for butter, margarine, cottage cheese and ice-cream.
Note: It is advisable to do your research on the suitability of containers for preparing lacto fermented foods and beverages.
