How To Improve Your Relationship With Your Teenage Children And Your Husband?

Stop Trying Harder and Learn To Respond Differently

Do you sometimes feel like you're walking on eggshells around your teenage children?

One minute everything is fine, and the next you're dealing with anger, tears, shouting, withdrawal or an emotional reaction that seems completely out of proportion to what has happened.

Perhaps your teenager struggles to calm down once they become upset. They may react quickly and intensely, act impulsively or shut down completely.

And then there is the relationship with your husband.

Perhaps you feel he doesn't really listen to you. You may feel unappreciated, taken for granted or emotionally disconnected.

You try to explain yourself.

You try harder.

You try to keep everyone happy.

Yet somehow, the harder you try to make things better, the worse things seem to become.

What if the answer isn't trying harder?

What if the answer is learning to respond differently?

You Can't Always Change Their Behaviour - But You Can Change Your Response

When someone you love becomes angry, emotional or withdrawn, it's natural to react.

Your teenager gets angry - you become frustrated.

They shout - you shout back.

They shut down - you push harder to get them to talk.

Your husband doesn't seem to listen - you explain yourself again.

Before long, everyone is caught inside the same pattern.

The problem is that your reaction can unintentionally become part of the pattern that keeps the problem going.

This doesn't mean you're to blame.

It means there may be another way.

Develop Your Requisite Variety

One of the powerful concepts Abby Eagle works with is requisite variety.

In simple terms:

The person with the greatest flexibility in their behaviour has the greatest ability to influence the outcome of an interaction.

If you always respond in the same way, you are likely to keep getting similar results.

But when you develop more behavioural choices, you have more ways to respond.

You can learn when to speak and when to listen.

When to challenge and when to step back.

When to engage and when to give someone space.

Instead of automatically reacting to someone else's emotional state, you can learn to remain resourceful and choose a response that is more likely to produce the outcome you want.

That's behavioural flexibility.

And it can be learned.

When Your Teenager Has Big Emotions

When a teenager is already highly emotional, trying harder to reason with them can sometimes make things worse.

You can learn to recognise the patterns that lead to emotional outbursts, manage your own state and communicate differently.

You can learn when to engage, when to create space and how to respond without automatically becoming caught up in their emotional reaction.

The goal isn't to control your teenager.

It's to become more flexible in how you respond to them.

And What About Your Husband?

Perhaps you've had the same conversation with your husband many times.

You've explained how you feel.

You've asked him to listen.

You've told him what you need.

Yet you still feel unheard or unappreciated.

Instead of asking:

"How do I make him listen?"

you can begin asking:

"What could I do differently that might create a different response?"

Changing the way you communicate can change the pattern of the interaction.

Imagine Having More Choices

Imagine your teenager has an emotional outburst...

And instead of automatically reacting, you remain calm and know what to do.

Imagine a difficult conversation with your husband begins...

And instead of falling into the same old pattern, you recognise what is happening and have several different ways of responding.

Imagine feeling more confident, resourceful and in control of your own behaviour.

You cannot control another person's emotions.

You cannot force your teenager or husband to change.

But you can change the way you respond.

And sometimes, changing one person's behaviour is enough to begin changing the entire pattern of interaction.

That person can be you.
